INDY 500: A look at dome skids, beam flaps and new safety features

With the help of James Hinchcliffe, his Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda IndyCar team, and Dallara, RACER takes you inside the newest safety devices introduced for the Indy 500. (Scroll down the page for video.) Mandated by the series, every team is required to fit a dome skid plate to the bottom of each chassis. The dome skid (above), made from a phenolic material, is curved, which is different from a standard flat skid plate used on road and street courses. Below the dome skid – closest to the track surface – teams are also required to fit triangular metal skid plates to protect the dome skids from being worn flat against the road.
