MILLER: Changing of the [silly] seasons

In the old days it was something to occupy the winter months, and about the only two participants were National Speed Sport News and The Indianapolis Star. In the 1960s and 1970s Chris Economaki's Editor's Notebook was the first place everyone went looking for IndyCar rumors, and yours truly joined in the game during the early-70s with a weekly column that centered on USAC. The only weapon back then was the telephone and The Star had a watts line, so I was able to dial up everyone from Dan Gurney to Smokey Yunick to Bernie Ecclestone (accidentally woke him up once chasing a Porsche to Indy rumor) at no extra charge to the newspaper.Gordon Kirby joined the fight to present "inside...
