In the old days it was something to occupy the winter months, and about the only two participants were National Speed Sport News and The Indianapolis Star. In the 1960s and 1970s Chris Economaki's Editor's Notebook was the first place everyone went looking for IndyCar rumors, and yours truly joined in the game during the early-70s with a weekly column that centered on USAC.
