Newgarden cleared to race on

Josef Newgarden, who has been nursing a fractured hand since a crash at Texas in June, has been cleared by doctors to race at Mid-Ohio, despite another shunt in Toronto. The Ed Carpenter Racing driver, clouted the curb at Turn 5 and had the wheel wrenched out of his hands on Lap 58 of Sunday’s Honda Indy Toronto. And while he put a brave face on the matter, he appeared to be in pain and speculation was that he’d further damaged the hand. However, a statement from IndyCar this morning announced that, “Following an examination yesterday by INDYCAR consultant Dr. Kevin Scheid, Ed Carpenter Racing driver Josef Newgarden has been cleared to resume racing activities.” Despite the DNF in...
