INDY 500: Newgarden tops frantic final practice

If Sunday's 100th Indianapolis 500 is as combative as Monday's 3 1/2-hour practice, people will get more than their money's worth. A total of 2,880 laps were logged by the 33 starters and, despite running three abreast through the short chutes and a couple of 18-car trains, there were no accidents or even a spin, although rookies Max Chilton and Stefan Wilson had a couple of close calls in the gray after being shoved out of the groove. After Honda took the pole position and the outside of Row 1 in Sunday's qualifying, Monday's fastest four drivers were powered by Chevrolet, led by Josef Newgarden's 227mph in the Preferred Freezer Chevy for Ed Carpenter Racing.
