The old adage "I'd rather be lucky than good" was put to use by Conor Daly and his A.J. Foyt Racing Chevy team in qualifying. But they capitalized when opportunity knocked. Thanks to a gift from Chip Ganassi Racing's Tony Kanaan, who lost his sixth-place position in the first round of qualifying due to an infraction, Daly was promoted to sixth and moved onto the Firestone Fast 12. With an average starting position of 18.6 this season, Daly was expected to qualify at the bottom of the Fast 12.
