Newgarden leads first Iowa practice
Josef Newgarden finished the opening Verizon IndyCar Series practice at Iowa where he ended last year's race: P1. The defending Iowa Corn 300 race winner, now driving for Team Penske, set a lap of 185.609mph (17.339s), edging teammates Will Power (+0.326s) and Simon Pagenaud (+0.1136s) and Chevy stablemate Ed Carpenter (+0.1386s). The Penske trio upended what looked to be a Honda advantage for the first hour of the 75-minute session, as Carpenter's early fast lap of 184.137mph was followed by Hondas in positions two through 10.
