INDYCAR: Bill Alsup 1938 - 2016

Former CART driver Bill Alsup died on Tuesday from injuries sustained in a crane accident. He was 78. According to the Silverton Standard, Alsup was operating the crane at a remote backcountry site near Silverton, CO., when it rolled while accelerating up a steep hillside. He was killed instantly. Born in Honolulu on July 15, 1938, Alsup first rose to motorsport prominence when he won the SCCA VW Gold Cup Super Vee Championship in 1978. A year later, he became the first-ever CART Rookie of the Year, and amassed 57 starts before leaving the series in 1984.
