INDYCAR: Schmidt third car doubtful
The unexpected addition of Chip Ganassi Racing to the Honda family could have an impact on Schmidt Peterson Motorsports' ability to field an extra entry in 2017. Team co-owner Sam Schmidt expressed his interest in expanding to three cars next year to complement the growing interest SPM has received from sponsors and drivers, but with three to four engine leases expected to be consumed by CGR, Honda Performance Development will be hard-pressed to meet the new and existing demand. Although HPD should gain two leases with AJ Foyt Racing's pending switch to Chevy, Schmidt says the net loss of one or two leases will likely keep SPM at two cars.
